Chinese iconography was prevalent at Dean and Dan Caten's Spring/Summer 2020 collection DSquared2 and so was one of the most, if not the most, famous Chinese actors in history: Bruce Lee. While the idea of two white designers drawing "inspiration" from Chinese and Asian cultures could easily veer into appropriation, there was something respectful in the way these two did it - though, surely, some might disagree but a baseline effort at respect for the largest cultural on Earth is a good start. The high energy of the collection called to mind the idea of tiger energy - an apt description of this effort.

Dean and Dan Caten went full metal rock for their FW19 collection for DSquared2. The result was jolting and, likely, that was the point. Their perennial take on Canadian mountain man-chic took a drastic turn for this collection. After taking some time to digest the collection, one could easily imagine that this collection might be on up for review on Project Runway: the twins were anything but safe; though in the end, the collection was off - maybe it was mishmash of grunge and glam rock or it could've just been the sense that Dean and Dan couldn't be bothered to try and instead let a bunch of inexperienced kids design the collection while they're off in Mykonos.

"Oversized" is ubiquitous in today's fashion lexicon and so to describe Dean and Dan Caten's footwear for DSquared2's SS19 as oversized would be an understatement. The XXL sized footwear anchored a collection that was a chicly done version of disheveled paratrooper, with flowy trousers, rakish vests over drape-y tees or even a tracksuit, for when these haphazardly dressed troopers go to exercise. Not much is ever too serious for these Canadian twins and so this collection with its fun tropes was a nice reprieve from the sometimes all-too-serious runway shows.

Canadian Twins Dean and Dan Caten wrangled up a western collection for DSquared2's FW18 that included the requisite cowboy shirts and hats and boots. What differentiated this collection from the multitude of other western-themed collections, past and present, was the Catens' effervescent styling, joie-de-vivre and lighthearted take on design - eschewing a heavy, solemness approach for, for lack of a better term, zero-fucks-given. Fun clothes, fun collection, what more could one ask from these two?

It takes a certain kind of masochist to wear as much leather during the summer as was shown the runway at DSquared2's Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Then again, the collection was (partly) influenced by London's punk movement, see the buckled patent leather winklepickers and matching buckles on leather and patterned pants. This collection was truly a melting pot of inspirations from the aforementioned goth influence to Hawaiian shirts to 70s suiting. The strongest pieces included an oversized leather jacket with red, white and periwinkle stripes, as well as a sequined and almost iridescent Hawaiian shirt.

Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten labeled this FW17 collection "D2GETHER" since it's the first ever co-ed show for the brand. The men's collection was mostly oversized: knits, coats, and jackets all were so large that many models hands couldn't be seen through the sleeves of the clothes they were wearing. The strongest parts of the collection was the end, which showcased the duo's best assets: their tailoring skills. Sublime suits and separates, worn with glam, studded and hard-edged boots, rocked the runway with enough attitude while cutesy touches like the floral patterns on some jackets and the scarves worn around the models necks softened the look.

A graffitied wall was the backdrop of DSquared2's Spring/Summer 2017 collection was reminiscent of what one might see in coordination of a back street, hard-edged fashion show full of hyper masculine men and matching clothes. Instead, what Dean and Dan Caten showed was equally as strong a look but one that celebrated flamboyance, freedom to be one's self and a joie de vivre that escapes many of the more "serious" labels. Platform heels (some in leather, some in sparkles, some in rainbow zigzag) were worn by every model, though a few were quite wobbly and many surely appreciated the hard work of their female counterparts when they wear sky-high heels on the runway.

Back to the clothes: they were definitely influenced from the street, with hard edges here and there, but the strongest, best pieces were the ones that were boldly sparkly and shiny. In light of recent tragic events in Orlando, Florida and the murder of British MP Jo Cox in London, where Dan and Dean reside, this collection's joy and celebration of life, lived to the fullest, with no fucks given, was a triumph. In their side-by-side strut down the runway for their finale, the Canadian twins donned rainbow scarves in solidarity for their slain brothers and sisters in Orlando.

Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared2 were strongly influenced by Japanese alternative culture for FW16. A strong showing of Asian models brought the idea home while grunge and punk influences abounded throughout the collection. The strongest looks were the ones that showcased the duo's tailoring skills with slim and body enhancing cuts and silhouettes.

DSquared2's surf themed Spring/Summer 2016 collection had a plethora of layers, from Native American patterned ponchos to the most notable layer: tattoo bodysuits. Denim is one of the Dean & Dan Caten's biggest sellers and there was plenty to choose from ranging from oversized and baggy to cowboy inspired. As entertaining as the show was, the gimmicks utilized during its fashion shows have grown a little stale, with little to no consistent view point from season to season. If consumers want dissonant collections with no connection to a central aesthetic or view point, there are plenty of much cheaper alternatives from H&M to Gap. A Dsquared2 label or the dream to look as smoldering as the models can only go so far for so long.

Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten kicked off Milan Fashion Week a day early with a collection that celebrated the twins' 20 years since starting DSquared2. How quickly the time has passed since the pint-sized design duo captured the fashion world with their high octane shows and sexy wares. For FW15, there were nods to their native Canada but mostly alluded to the Wild West, with plenty of fringe, cowboy-esque hats and low slung denim, a signature of theirs. There were also hilariously oversized fur hats, some too big to fit the heads of the models who wore them. Speaking of fur, there was plenty of it. They can only celebrate 20 years of the label once, why not create a maximist collection full of luxe furs, beading and leather? That's what they provided, all wrapped up in their signature mix of sex and youth culture. It didn't hurt that the finale showcased not only flashy tuxedoes but the musical stylings of Mary J. Blige.

Dean and Dan Caten took us back to school for their SS15 collection; art school to be exact. The collection didn't romanticize the idea of artsy boys drawing figures on a canvas, instead the youth oriented collection ramped up the sex factor while street inspired designs felt the strongest. Take the neon colored pieces like a rubbery skirt in magenta or neon green moto-jacket. Tailoring is still the twins' forte and that shined through on cropped pants and a beige trench with blue "tape" accents. While the collection was no doubt fun and carefree, the appliquée of cats on a knit was just the right about of cheeky.
