Christopher Shannon's latest outing offered athleisure for young men, unafraid of a ruching for a gender-bending look or are indecisive over whether they prefer the oversized or skinny silhouette, so why not have both?

Christopher Shannon's narrative on current events, and that specifically of the UK, are front and center at his FW17 show, from the face scarves worn by models depicting the flag to his kitschy takes on famous logos, like "Tumbleweed" (Timberland) or "Loss" (Hugo Boss). Meanwhile, ripped and destroyed layers harkened the soon-to-be separation of the UK with the European Union. Nevertheless, the clothes were still wearable and, according to the models, quite comfortable. Who says taking a stand using fashion has to be uncomfortable? Not Christopher Shannon.

A denim lover's dreams was what Christopher Shannon proffered for Spring/Summer 2017. Boxy denim jackets, slashed or fringed, were seen while athletic track suits showed a little edge to them - a little campy, a little retro but mostly a lot of fun to wear.

Fashion and commentary are Christopher Shannon's one-two punch. The British designer's FW16 collection was strong both in it's fashion but also in its message. There were, of course, great shirts, mostly in patches, as well as athletic wear that subtly hinted at athleisure and the confluence of sweatpants with high fashion. In the end, Christopher Shannon's presentation was powerful not just for the chic takes on track suits and patchwork button downs but also its commentary on the statement of fashion: the seemingly neverending need for product and new ways to segment the market even more (100% pure!). Great clothes and a penny for your thoughts are hard to come by in fashion nowadays but Christopher Shannon is one who gives both.

Christopher Shannon's SS16 collection offered gorgeous and voluminous coats, in technical fabrics like neoprene, while knits with cigarette lighters, frosted hair and litany of zippers and tape highlighted Shannon's narrative. The message seemed to center around the idea using of clothing as armor to portray a certain image meanwhile the wearer is damaged and barely holding it all together, like the duck-taped tops. It all tied together like a fun, and slightly irrelevant, bow, or in this case, the strap of a bra. The fluid proportions and play on DIY design resulted in an astute observation from the designer that no matter how put together we may look, we're all a bit of a hot mess.

Plastic bags take centuries to decompose, that's why many environmental activities have heralded reusable bags for years. The idea has slowly caught on with the general public but not fast enough for Christopher Shannon. The requisite plastic bag that grocery stores around the world offer to consumers to carry their purchases is front and center at Shannon's FW15 collection: plastered on knits, with logos like "Thanks 4 Nothing", covering several models faces, and even one look that was made to look like an artfully tied floral scarf. The narrative (repurposing/recycling) was simple enough to follow but the clothes, with their intricate design aspects like the swaths of extra fabrics jutting from behind, some "taped" to shoulders or sleeves, all the way to an entire outfit made from track pants were the real standouts.

As LCM comes out of its infancy, there are essentially two types of collections that were born out of this three day expo of British talent: classic British tailoring like that found at Savile Row and newer, edgier designs. Christopher Shannon is of the latter lot and for SS15, he opted for a youthful, if not emo-wrought collection of rounded shoulders, oversized proportions and DIY-style cutouts; representing the male teen who hacks away at his clothes, from the institution where his parents bought them, so that his clothes reflect who he is, rather than who his parents want him to be. It's no wonder Christopher Shannon recently won the inaugural BFA/GQ Menswear Award Fund, kudos!
