RUNWAY: Simon Spurr SS12
British-born designer Simon Spurr took his classic silhouettes and sharp tailoring and added so much pizzazz, we didn't know which detail to pay attention to. From the first outfit on Paul Boche, it was clear that the collection would take menswear staples and amp up the accouterments, seen in the form of leather, patchwork and mesh details. At times, it worked marvelously like an olive military jacket with a patent leather stripe but at times it faltered. Color blocking once again dominated the runway. Though we weren't so keen on some of the pieces, as a whole, this collection was a showcase of Spurr's excellent tailoring skills and that is why he's one of the most promising menswear designers showing during New York Fashion Week. If Robert Geller and Simon Spurr are to be taken seriously when it comes to SS12 styling then it seems mesh is in; so men: take this upcoming FW11 season to bulk up because mesh shirts are unforgiving.
