While the rest of was oogling over the idea of decades-past, Paul Smith not only lived through them but was designing during those times. So for his Spring/Summer 2020 collection, he looked the double-breasted suits that were popular in the 70s and 80s and injected them with modernity in the form of looser silhouettes, technical detailing and fabrications and a color palette that is made for the modern man who's confident enough to wear pastels and neon colors.

Paul Smith's color offering was bold and mixed well with his penchant for mod-style garments. Clothes in lime, yellow, and red mixed with jaunty knits and cool boots while cropped military cut jackets rounded out his FW19 offerings.

Paul Smith's been on the fashion landscape for nearly 50 years, a great feat in any industry, and with all the fashion designer shuffling that's been happening the past decade, Smith was feeling thankful that his namesake label is still independently owned - by him. So, with that in mind, he went back to the beginning and riffed off a collection that updated pieces from his archives some nearly 50 years ago. There were checkerboard shirts, black-and-white loafers and roomy tailoring, all of which would have fit just fine in today's design aesthetic. The pieces that stood out - good or bad, depending on one's eye - were the aged photographs that looked like they burnt on the fabric, images of landscapes, sunsets and surfers; it added a bit of nostalgia to the vintage-themed collection.

Paul Smith will not be subject to following trends, he'll do as he pleases, he's been in the business long enough and he is an OBE. Unlike his peers who are throwing the suit out the window, Smith put them front and center and added some street-inspired garments to appeal to a young demographic, like a padded moto jacket with fur collar which looked sublime.

Beautiful vibrant shirts, under-the-sea prints and tropical landscape littered Paul Smith's 70s-tinged Spring/Summer 2018 collection. The colorful suits played well with the Hawaiian printed shirts while the star of the collection were the striking tropical landscape seen on everything from lapels to bombers and everything else in between.

Eschewing a show in Paris, Paul Smith showed his FW17 collection in Florence during Pitti Uomo. What followed was an exercise in functionality and style. Rather than static models who stood in hot lights for hours at a time, Smith hired models to perform gravity defying feats while donning his performance-friendly collection. The clothes trended to have a base color of black with bright dashes of color, something Smith is known for.

Paul Smith's latest outing for his eponymous label transcribed a laid back island aesthetic of roomy layers and plenty of color. The sporty looks looked ready for a night or a day at the park.

Paul Smith's graphic FW16 collection focused on lines, like a chunky band running from the side of a coat down to the matching trousers, what a smart way to get people to buy the whole look! There was other lighthearted elements to the show like the dinosaur or paisley appliquees on a shirt or a pair of pants. Meanwhile, boxy coats and a slight flair seen on a few pairs of pants gave the collection a mod feel which seems to be more aligned with what we saw in London and Milan rather than Paris, which has been all about the 90s.

Quirkiness and an independent style were front and center at Paul Smith's SS16 show. Though he's far from retiring, Smith spanned the decades to show off some of his best and favorite pieces, from boxy suits from the 1980s to mod from 1960s. Seemingly dissparate, it all came together in a coherent and youthful collection.

Paul Smith's geometric-heavy Fall/Winter 2015 collection was tame and chic, with an emphasis on easy layers, roomy coats, a slight 80s vibe coming from shoulder pads, and a handful of super-chic puffers, even one that was nearly full length with snap closures. Nomadic layers were also seen and complemented by very luxe fur coats, complete with fur scarves, with some coats taking on the same square tile design seen throughout the show.

Paul Smith looked to the ongoing debate over marijuana legalization when he showcased his SS15 collection. Cannabis leaves, joints and other pot-culture references ran rampant through the collection that also featured a lot of psychedelic colors and fringe. The collection was essentially an ode to the stoner but with easy tailoring and plenty of luxe details, like silky trousers.

After a psychedelic SS14, Paul Smith explores a more demure take on the 1970s. The LSD prints were gone and the British designer's musical influences were front and center via musical notes, sometimes just one two on a knit or on an entire coat. Adding a bit of sparkle from sequins on shirts or showcasing his classic English tailoring skill, Smith combined the codes he has made famous and intertwined them with a relaxed vibe, like one might see at an opium den.
