Earth tone, paisley patterns and a geek-tastic licensing deal with Star Wars were all plentiful at Etro's Spring/Summer 2020 runway show, though the combination of them all, along with the boho-chic created a bit of a disconnect in the collection.

Along before a certain Florentine label burst back on the scene with flamboyant prints and patterns, there was Etro. For FW19, there were souvenir jackets in Asian-inspired patterns, baroque jackets, jacquard pants and much more to appease the man who likes to stand out.

Beautiful brocades anchored Etro's SS19 collection, as did subtle patterns from palm trees to various flora, mixing with soft tailored pieces with strong influences from the Middle East and Northern Africa. All of which coalesced into a visually pleasing collection with pieces that Etro aficionados will gobble up, such as the graphic backpack and all the paisley patterned shirts which the label is known for.

Etro offered a collection that touched on its biggest draws: its signature paisley prints and melded that with a cool, Mediterranean-cum-Moroccan vibe. Clothes were fluid and had an athletic bend while beading and embroidery elevated the clothes to highlight the handiwork of the atelier.

Sun-kissed skin brought the idea of too much sun exposure on the slopes at Etro's FW17 show. These active men, in shiny and patterned suits and hiking boots, looked like a particular shade of Cheeto, with "raccoon eyes". The clothes themselves were signature Etro: strong on flamboyant patterns, including florals and paisleys, while shiny detailing brought glamour to the active-minded clothes.

Etro's Spring/Summer 2017 collection was peculiar and not just for the "real men" who walked the runway. In lieu of a professional stylist creating and curating each look, the men were allowed to pick their own look. The result was distinctly casual but also a little powerful because these men were proud of what they were wearing because they felt comfortable in it, why else wear it then? So what did these men wear? Aside from the typical Etro patterns, there was an emphasis on laid back, nonchalant layers: flowy bottoms, lightweight tops (layered, of course), and tapered trousers.

Everyone nowadays exaggerates a little bit. When someone bemoans they had the worst day ever, it likely was not the worst day ever. In fashion terms, exaggeration can take many forms. At Etro's FW16 show, exaggeration came in the form of decoration. Cableknit sweaters had one, very large cable down the middle. Velvet was high pile. Fur coats were extra fuzzy. Evening jackets glistened. Nothing was obtuse, instead the effect was quite nice. It made the collection a bit dynamic and expanded the label's notoriety as the go-to for paisley shirts.

Etro is known for their patterns, paisley to be exact, and there were plenty of cool patterns to be seen at their SS16 runway show. However, the story here was all about multiculturalism and the world being a little smaller, thanks to planes, trains, and social media. The textural fabrics gave the collection a lot of depth, whether futuristic like a collarless top coat in a shiny plaid or classic Etro like utilizing jacquard in a suit. While most of the European houses are offering languid layers, Etro's prim and streamlined silhouettes stood out for its relative austerity. The designer, Kean Etro, knows what his customers want and it's to look put together with strong, masculine tailoring.

Etro's FW15 had all the hallmarks of the cheeky Italian label: paisleys and florals. Texture was also a strong story this season, with plenty of velvet and suede, as seen on various coats and jackets. Meanwhile, the florals and paisleys patterns seen throughout the collection felt vintage, like they were from another time (the 1970s to be exact) and helped evoke a soft and romantic vibe to the collection.

After a sea of beige, it was a pleasure to see Etro's Spring/Summer 2015 collection. The bright hues and classic Etro patterns were a great reprieve while the tailoring seemed akin to a decade long gone, the roomier fit still felt relevant and on trend, considering that Milanese designers have tried for years to get men to stop wearing super skinny silhouettes, if only to get them to buy new pieces and drive up sales. That is the point of commerce, after all. Back to the collection, there were roughly 60 looks in this collection and a literal smorgasbord (vegetables, fruits, pasta and more!) was what designer Kean Etro offered in the eccentric part of the collection.

Etro, known for their paisley patterns, showed a deluge of patterns from plaid to windowpane for Fall/Winter 2014. The focus here was tailoring, for the young and young at heart. Sportswear was almost non-existent in the collection. To really bring home the idea that tailoring is key for Etro next season, the finale had the label's tailors walk out with the models, a great way to end a show! The men and women who work in the atelier rarely get much attention and when an established label like Etro pays tribute to them in this manner, it's always quite poignant.
