A retro theme ran through the Band of Outsiders's latest offering with boxy silhouettes, double breasted jackets and a hint of sci-fi via screenprinted imagery of the moon landing.
RUNWAY: Band of Outsiders FW19
The original Band of Outsiders aesthetic hinged upon a certain cool-geek-intellectual aesthetic that's been injected into this SS19 collection shown in Florence, sans the founding designer. The SS19 collection looked similar to that of the old but the feeling was different, it seemed, as West Coasters would say: full of posers. There was an intended tackiness to the collection that was on trend with the industry but as a whole, the collection felt inauthentic. It is a very difficult job to have to revamp a label that was so loved and whose aesthetic nearly defined a chunk of American fashion history. It might not be entirely the design team's fault, instead majority of the blame should rest on the new owners who attempted to relaunch the label too soon, with everyone's fond memories still fully intact.

Since Band of Outsiders relaunched without its founder, the label has been met with tepid reaction. For its FW18, the label aims high with an apres-ski themed collection that hits most notes soundly. There were great coats with Americana detailing - think red, white and blue - while athletic-minded designs harked on track pants while still offering a versatility; in all, a solid effort.

Since relaunching about 2 years ago without its founder, Band of Outsiders has been missing that je ne sais quoi that made the original so fun and interesting. A shuffle of designers behind the scene hasn't brought back that energy but for SS18, the label did well enough to bridge the gap between the old and the new. Band of Outsiders will never be what they were before - lightning won't strike twice - but the sharp designs seen in this collection and with a certain level of quirk, there is at least hope that the investors who bought out founder Scott Sternberg didn't do it for naught.

Band of Outsiders returns to the runway after a tumultuous bankruptcy and subsequent sale of the brand to a new owner, without its founder. No other look encompassed the feel of the collection more than a bomber with "B" on side and a big question mark on the other. Who is this Band of Outsiders? They're still preppy, aiming to encapsulate the unique viewpoint of its founder and the downtown-kid look he helped cultivate, but falling a bit short. In all, it was a valiant effort but felt off somehow, like the distressed and oversized collegiate sweater.

Americana has never looked so off-kilter or as chic as it does in Scott Sternberg's FW15 collection for Band of Outsiders, a name that's in strict conflict of its status as the most desired label for the hippest of men and women. For FW15, there were plays on American hardware logos, including a cheeky take on tire manufacturer Goodyear's name as Bad Year. In all, the collect continues its ascent as one of the go-to label for ironic, well made clothes.

Band of Outsiders's founder Scott Sternberg took us on a trip for SS15. It had all the markings of a wild mushroom trip with psychedelic colors, bold aesthetics and "look at me" details. That's not to say that Sternberg threw caution to the wind with an unruly collection. On the contrary, the SS15 collection was effortlessly chic and perfectly tongue-in-cheek; a strong meld of tailoring and youthful abandon. Take the bold patterns, louche knits, disheveled tuxedo and waxed anoraks, they were all off kilter in some way, maybe a little oversized or outre, but eye catching and oh-so-wearable.

Band of Outsiders, one of the purveyors of the hipster aesthetic, looks to 1950s England for inspiration for the upcoming Fall/Winter 2014 collection. Scott Sternberg noted an homage to newspapers, with cool vintage looking knits and page boy caps, with models looking ready to holler "Extra, extra!". Ombre shirts looked young and well executed, while a cropped leather and shearling toggle coat was exceptional. A hoody was paired with a suit that offered a relaxed fit and featured a one-button closure, which seems increasingly rare to see on the men's runways nowadays.

Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders continues to find new ways to present his latest collections. Last season, he took a page from Marina Abramovic and opted for a performance art-style show. For FW13, Sternberg aptly named it "Matt VS. Miles". That is, Matt Hitt versus Miles Garber. The two models donned 10 looks each from the upcoming collection. Sternberg's take on modern Americana is refined and innovative while the cornerstone of menswear (tailoring) is strong and stable at Band of Outsiders.

Hipster favorite Band of Outsiders presented their Fall/Winter 2012 collection today for the Boy & Girl lines. For FW12, the mens line paid an ode to Westerns; cowboys and Indians, minus all the brutality. Gorgeous outerwear ranged from subtle striped peacoat on Taylor Fuchs to shaggy overcoat. Quilts also played a large role, seen on coats and scarves. The ready to wear offered a large and colorful selection and was styled perfectly to reflect the biggest craze in fashion: color blocking.

For Band of Outsiders' first ever runway show, they sent their models down from the sky on cords, how very 127 Hours, let's hope none of the models had a fear of heights! The clothes, however, were very Band of Outsiders, with deconstructed suits, strong shouldered outerwear and a healthy helping of hip-ster vibe, with a bit of fur thrown for extra luxury.
