RUNWAY: Dolce&Gabbana SS12
Dolce&Gabbana's main line is one of the biggest productions that come out of menswear every season and it is also one of the most anticipated. There is no question that Domenico and Stefano know how to cut suits and are exceptional tailors, they wouldn't be a $1 billion (US) per year company if they weren't. That being said, the collection felt like complete rehash of every collection they've ever done with slight modifications to modernize or change how it drapes the body. The recurring themes of strong Sicilian men hasn't faded from their mood board either. This season, however, they seemed to be heavily influenced by fishermen. More specifically, the nets fishermen use to capture fish on their boats. The fisherman net pattern was seen in many of the sportswear pieces, such as the sweater Arthur Kulkov wears in the second look or the net jacket with leather and suede pockets that Sebastian Lund wears halfway through the show. It is a bit gimmicky but it works for them because in a collection as massive as theirs, they can afford to be a bit gimmicky because people will continue to buy their clothes because they're buying into the sex appeal of wearing Dolce&Gabbana.
As an aside, by next season (Fall/Winter 2012), Dolce&Gabbana could look much different than we know it today. There is a rumor that the sartorially inclined duo are planning to consolidate their main line and the diffusion line, D&G, into one collection.
