While Paris Fashion Week was happening, there were murmurs that another label would soon cease their ready-to-wear collections, like Jean Paul Gaultier. Cue Viktor & Rolf's announcement this morning that the FW15 season will be the duo's last in the RTW market, they'll focus all their energy on haute couture, as well as their profitable fragrance licenses.
For their menswear finale, the duo proffered a somber end: a color palette that trended toward greys and blacks, with a hint of olive here or there, all seen on graphic designs, from cropped and fitted suits to sportier offerings like puffer jackets and a varsity-inspired knit. The textures like lush tweeds and the graphic patterns were appealing and were pared back so not to take away from the austere tailoring, an elegant exit for a duo whose avant-garde reputation precedes them.

Viktor & Rolf's Monsieur collection for SS15 was a healthy mix of sportswear and tailoring. In the former, there were great patterns, like an abstract take on camouflage that was seen on everything from scarves to coats to even a boxy denim jacket. As for tailoring, there was a plethora of well executed trousers for every occasion, perfect to dress up or dress down, maybe with a V&R bomber with the duo's signature stamp logo. Formal wear offered a bit of quirk via crinkled linen, because, why not? Linen wrinkles quickly so it might as well be treated so the wrinkles look artfully done.

Since announcing that they were starting up their couture business again, Viktor&Rolf Monsieur has been relegated to static presentations. However, that doesn't mean the duo's menswear collection has suffered because of it. On the contrary, since they are able to more fully explore their creative limits in their couture line, the Monsieur line has also experienced a flush of creativity. Take their FW14 collection: strong, masculine tailoring was softened quite literally by soft fabrics, like a short puffer with a white stripe that announced "Monsieur". The collegiate vibe from the collection instantly made it feel more fresh and youthful while simple but effective piping on lapels, jackets and coats added something special without going over the top.

It was bittersweet when Viktor & Rolf announced that they would not be showing a full-fledged men's fashion show for SS14. They opted against it since the duo are dipping their toes back into haute couture, where they first started. So for the upcoming season, the forward-thinking designers tapped Thomas Burkovatz to don their collegiate inspired college of asymmetrical jackets, graphic knits and boxy trousers. Viktor & Rolf's calming color scheme was in line with the rest of the fashion luminaries and as they mixed the blues with the collegiate theme, what resulted was nothing short of an excellent interpretation of the allure and nonchalance of youth.

There was a quintessential university prep vibe on Viktor & Rolf's Fall/Winter 2013 runway. The duo, who are known for their sometimes outlandish and creative designs, opted for a pared back collection that was geek chic. Some looks ranged from professorial to casual student-wear; there were even some flamboyance thrown in via glinting finishes.
