RUNWAY: Pyer Moss SS19

There was defiance in Pyer Moss's latest collection, posing the question "SEE US NOW?" to the receiver of the message, which was seen on some of the garments. Meanwhile, painterly prints from Derrick Adams depicted serene scenes of black people doing normal things like barbecuing. Such normal and innocuous acts have been in the news lately as a simple BBQ in a park caused a ruckus as a white woman called the police on a black family who were doing just that in a public park. In instances such as this, there should be anger that black people are often targeted and accused of doing nefarious things just for being black; there is a common trope within the black community that being black is a crime in itself. However, there is so much beautiful in the black experience as well and that's also alluded to here with their vibrant colors and the collaboration seen here with FUBU, the iconic 90s label which stands for For Us, By Us - the "us" being black people. In all, this collection was powerful and strong in its beauty and defiance and higlighted the necessary need for the inclusion of non-white designers in the fashionscape.
