RUNWAY: Calvin Klein 205W39NYC SS19

"Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water" is one of the most famous lines from any movie and that movie, JAWS, was referenced at last night's Calvin Klein 205W39NYC show. Also featured in the cinematic-leaning collection was The Graduate, a movie in which the main character aims to figure himself out. What do these two movies have in common in CK's Raf Simons? They're just movies he likes. However, a deeper meaning could obviously be gleaned. The sharks that took pieces out of women's skirts could be the ravenous appetite for products and collection that consumers and corporate overloads desire. The Graduate might allude to Simons state of mind: he has already won the CFDA Designer of the Year award twice so, now what? What is he going to do with Calvin Klein after two consecutive wins?

However, we think that the movie references should be taken at face value as a way to drum up social-media frenzy on those covetable JAWS x cK tees. The rubber wetsuits worn by many of the male models looked cool and subversive, some wearing them half open revealing an animalia print or just a bare chest. Elsewhere, oversized and very boxy jackets could be linked back to Simons' SS19 collection for his eponymous label. Like all movies, this collection had an end, which brought back the fringed accessories that Simons has shown with nearly every collection and is now seen as a sort of thread that runs through this era of Calvin Klein. As the lights came up at 205 W 39th Street and we mulled what we had just seen and thought "that was it?"
