RUNWAY: dunhill SS16
British label
dunhill's (lower case d, natch) prim and proper Spring/Summer 2016 collection looked to the idillic time when men got dressed to go outside of the home. This was made evident in the opening look's very formal suit, complete with morning coat and top hat. The label's long history stretches back to the late 1800s so the elements of turn-of-the-century exploration are rife here. These men are off to explore, be it Africa, India or some other far flung place. The romantic viewpoint that heritage houses like dunhill have at turn-of-the-century British exploration does give a sense of nostalgia but an acknowledgement that imperialism also brought about enslavement and murder for the good of Mother England should be given. Otherwise, it may be time to look forward and not back.
