RUNWAY: Jil Sander SS13
The return of Jil Sander, the woman, was marked with lots of buzz, from the un-ceremonial dismissal of the house's former designer, Raf Simons (now at Christian Dior), to the news that Jil would return to the house that bears her name. It has been seven years since Ms. Sander designed a collection under her own name, she's previously worked with Uniqlo for several collaboration collection. But seven long years have passed since she has designed the brand she created. For SS13, the collection that came out of that long absence, was modern, fresh and minimal, all things she helped propel to the fashion forefront so many years ago. A rich color palette edged the collection to the modern day, especially the supremely chic outerwear in two-tone hues. The only real patterns seen were abstract numerical ones on shirts and a rather youthful pattern that resembled television static. As for footwear, she made a statement with very not-in-vogue footwear choices: square-toed shoes. They were powerful and hard to miss, which could be a metaphor for herself. In an interview leading up to the debut of this collection, she stated that she hopes to bring the brand back to its heritage and she does just that with this collection.
