Japan was a focus for Umit Benan's FW16 collection, take the ceremonial feast of sushi and a halfnaked man as part of the runway show. As for the collection, it was rife with references to Japan. Gi's and images of the rising sun all made their way into the collection of roomy clothes in lush fabrics. A leather anorak was sublime while a baroque jacket looked quite dapper.

American and Cuban relations have been frosty for decades thanks to an embargo by the former on the latter. However, the two nations have started to bridge the geopolitical gap. Umit Benan senses the change and seemed to have been inspired by Cuban men, with a strong focus on their military-minded leaders like Fidel Castro. Meld that with a cool 50s vibe, a cigar here and there, tall, dark and handsome men and the collection was super chic, with separates like army-inspired shirts and great military-inspired tailored coats sure to be retail hits.

The sea was an inspiration to Umit Benan when creating his FW15 collection. Nautical themes abounded while men carrying fishing rods and buckets brought the idea home, though there may not have been need to be so literal. As for the clothing, they were unadulteratedly chic and carried a sense of nonchalance, even when faced by the unforgiving sea.

Umit Benan moved his eponymous collection from Milan to Paris this season and the designer offered a new take on retro. It was all about tennis, with graphics of a tennis court seen on the crests of bombers and polos while the fit and tailoring added a sexy, South American vibe that was enhanced by the tall, dark and handsome men who wore the clothes.

Since leaving Trussardi, Umit Benan also decamped from Milan to show his eponymous collection in Paris this season. This season has seen a barrage of sports references, it's reached a point where there's virtually no sport left that hasn't inspired a designer. For his FW14 collection, Umit Benan looked to America's past for inspiration, as well as America's favorite past time: baseball. Much like Walter Van Beirendonck, Benan took on racism that famed baseball legend Jackie Robinson faced Baseball jackets, wide and fluid, as well as varsity jackets were aplenty while his take on anoraks were supremely chic and emphasized that Benan's an expert tailor. As for suits, they reflected the fit and style of the 1940s when Robinson broke the ceiling for African American athletes in the mainstream.
