Richard Chai's first ever men's-only show proved a good gamble. The Chinese-American designer showcased a hip and downtown-cool collection that had all the hallmarks of a retail and fashion win: covetable graphic shirts, cool footwear, and a plethora of soft tailoring, highlighting the man wearing the designs.

Richard Chai's urbane Fall/Winter 2015 collection proffered subtle plaid patterns, fur trimmed coats, and a handful of digital camouflage patterns that looked fresh and youthful. Slim cut puffers looked great by themselves but when paired with a snow-white pair of pants, the look was chic and offered something more sophisticated than Chai's street-meets-fashion aesthetic.

Stripes galore! Richard Chai's punk-y take on sportswear was anchored by graphic stripes, from black, blue and white on the first men's look to a monochromatic one with diagonal lines on a pajama-like top. In addition to the graphic stripes, there was also plenty to catch one's eye, like chunky, hiking-inspired boots and transparent layers. The paper-thin transparent layers served two purposes: offering easy dressing on hot days and adding a bit of sex appeal. The play on hard and soft were strongest in the opening looks while tailored pieces showcased talent and ability, they ultiamtely felt out of place in this new graphic world the first few looks had the audience wanting for more.

New York-based designer Richard Chai showed a utilitarian and rugged collection for his Fall/Winter 2014 collection, with ample street-inspired looks, including lightly wrinkled fabrics seen on suits and varsity jackets. Other interesting notes include graphic stripes on a suit and bomber jacket. Touching on the growing trend of three-button suits, Chai also showed some tailored jackets with three buttons, offering both double and single-breast suits. Fashion does tend to be cyclical and we think menswear designers are starting to tire from one and two-button suits.
