For Spring/Summer 2015, New York-based designer Marlon Gobel embarks on a lofty trip through "transhumanism", a fringe-y sect of science that's best known to the masses by a TV show with a cult following, Orphan Black. Though there are no clones at Gobel's show, the result of this machine-meets-human venture resulted in surprisingly wearable clothes and wearable tech, an apropos time since the Apple Watch was announced the day before this show. The tailored outerwear, from metallic croc jackets to a sublime neoprene trench, were highlights while a relaxed and almost unisex series of accessories added to the collection's futuristic feel (boleros & shrugs for men?). Kudos to Dominic Elvin who created the headpieces which almost stole the show. As for bottoms, they were in line with the relaxed cut and athletic fabrics that's been predominant in menswear this season.

On this day, twelve years ago, New York was attacked by terrorists hoping to destroy the American spirit. They did not; instead, New York, and America, continued to grow, thanks to its people. For Spring/Summer 2014, Marlon Gobel was inspired by the men whose hard work built, and subsequently rebuilt, New York. Rivets and studs were used as accents on jackets while harnesses, with hooks, were used as belts, while Born collaborated with Gobel on the ready-for-anything footwear like strong oxfords and wingtips. The denim on the runway was tough and a bit raw, just like the men that inspired them. In the end, a masculine collection emerged, a strong homage to the men whose muscles weren't born out of a gym but from lifting themselves upwards to create the greatest city in the world.

Marlon Gobel's unique vision of menswear has led him to collaborate with big names like Swarovski and is currently being named by Fern Mallis of the CDFA as an emerging designer. For FW13, entitled The Punishment of Luxury, Gobel looked to the past to help shape his future. WWI and WWII style military garb seemed to be the inspiration for many of the chic masculine looks, with plenty of evidence of Gobel's ability to tailor. So the question remains, where does the punishment come in? The answer might lie in the fact that this show, along with a handful of others, happened during a blizzard in New York. But as the saying goes, we suffer for fashion.

New York-based designer Marlon Gobel dedicated his SS13 collection to the recently departed astronaut and American hero Neil Armstrong. So it was quite fitting were the bedazzled emblems of a spaceship on some of the outerwear. The highlight of any Marlon Gobel show, of course, is the tailoring and suiting. Bold prints and colors proliferated those looks while our favorite was the pixel-patterned suit.
