As J.Crew repositions its offerings to center more towards "heritage" pieces and away from capital-F Fashion, its latest collection could hint at what's to come. There were relaxed silhouettes, with many a pant wrinkles and crinkled, gave an island-life vibe while sun-faded hues littered the entire collection from a straw-hued jacket to drab olive military coat over a slim suit worn with trainers.

Hoist the anchor, J.Crew is taking us for a nautical adventure. The American company took the ever-popular sailing theme as its inspiration for its Spring/Summer 2015 collection. Many have fallen at the weight of being too literal with this theme but J.Crew's expert stylists and atelier created a cohesive collection of relaxed tailored looks - with plenty of nautical stripes - and added a bit of kitsch, like bucket hats and bandanas, and utilized a laid-back color palette, one rich in the colors of the Mediterranean.

J.Crew is one of the few, if not only, American mass retailer that has successfully upped its fashion quotient. Unlike other retailers that create one-off collections with big names or ones that heavily "borrow" looks from high fashion labels, J.Crew sticks to its roots by constantly showing new iterations of Americana. For FW14, the collection was inspired by New York in the 1940s and the men who helped build the city up by working on the docks. These blue collar workers wore utilitarian clothes fit for their trade but J.Crew added in luxe materials like cashmere to give them a truly high fashion feel at affordable prices.

J.Crew is no longer just an American retailer, it has expanded overseas and with shipping available around the world, it's no surprise that the American heritage brand looked to the seas as part of its inspiration for SS14. Colors of the sea were calm and soothing while nautical themes are always a welcome sight every Spring season. We particularly were fond of the relaxed but still slim silhouettes. For suiting, there was plenty to oogle, with subtle patterns mixing to create cohesive looks.

Top American retailer J.Crew returned to New York Fashion Week to show off their latest wears. For their men's collection, they opted for a relaxed, egalitarian look with an emphasis on rich, saturated colors. Easy-to-wear patterned knits complemented the solid colors that predominated the collection. Though we're not sure we want to break the fashion faux pas of wearing white afte Labor Day; we have no issue with wearing a scarf or muffler with every look.
