Multi-culturalism was on display at Diesel Black Gold's FW18 outing. There were patterns from all over the globe from North and South America, Africa, and Asia. It was a melting pot of references that, while at times a bit entropic, lent the collection and the hard-edged models who walked the runway a sense of being part of a tribe. Anyone who's ever been in a new place, either because of immigration or just starting a new job or school, knows how important it is to feel connected to others and this collection, with its sort of adequately diverse cast, were a tribe of sorts, ones who like to wear leather and native patterns. It was not a life changing collection and it didn't have to be, it was well made and the theme shined through,

Diesel Black Gold offered layers upon layers for Spring/Summer 2018, from leather leggings (or were they technically pants?) to elongated vests, knits tied around the waist, to shorts over the leggings/pants.

Diesel's runway collection, Black Gold, is rooted in black, leather and a hard-edged aesthetic. That still somewhat ringed true for its FW17 collection but a sheen of elegance dotted this latest outing, with sharp, technical fabrics giving the collection's hard edge a softer and modern look, rather than one stuck in the 80s idea idea of rockers and bikers. Slightly oversized proportions seen on coats and light jackets offered rounded shoulders and a softer aesthetic, which is in line with how the rest of the industry seems to be going.

Diesel's latest campaign is full of sexual innuendo, with saying like "I could go either way". The studio campaign was shot by Santiago and Mauricio Sierra, with styling from Davey Sutton, modeled by Julian Schratter, Kris Gottschalk, Lucas Ucedo, and Miles Frank.

Diesel Black Gold's usual sea of black on black clothes softened a little for SS17, with more denim and pastel-hued looks that evoked a lighter, more season-appropriate wardrobe for the label's Rock n' Roll clientele.

In addition to the leather jackets and pants we've come to expect from Diesel Black Gold, there were elements that did surprise, like the puffy fur coats and the play on volume. The result was an on-trend collection that offered a slight deviation from what's expected while still offering what the loyal Black Gold customer wants: hard-edged clothes with an emphasis on the Rock n' Roll lifestyle.

Diesel Black Gold's flurry of black, white, and navy Spring/Summer 2016 collection heralded a year-round take of fashion. Many of the looks could be easily utilized in the summer or winter. A bomber jacket with a light shirt and slim cut trousers for summer and leather pants and a suede jacket for winter. There were a plethora of options that Diesel provided for its loyal band of followers to ogle and desire over.

The rebellious boys at Diesel Black Gold repurposed chic military coats from their fathers or grandfathers and added chains, patches, studs and other embellishments to make the coats their own, to signify their protests to the establishment and proudly represent the punk movement. That was the crux of Diesel Black Gold's FW15 collection, amidst the tailored coats, there were leather pants, ripped jeans and a host of buffalo plaid, all to help round out the collection's focus.

Diesel Black Gold's trim silhouettes might be an outlier this season but there's sure to be plenty of desire for them, from skinny leather pants to equally slim jeans; the collection's tailoring was not for those who are "big boned". Instead, the high end sibling of Diesel opted to double down on the slim cuts by showcasing tight knits and outerwear that hugged the body.

Since ascending to the position of Creative Director of Diesel Black Gold, Andreas Melbostad has infused new life into this often-times neglected sibling of Diesel because of its higher prices and confusion among general consumers over the difference between Diesel's various lines. That may soon change as Pitti Immagine Uomo invited Diesel Black Gold to be its guest designer during the FW14 tradeshows.

Melbostad showed what he had to offer today in Florence and the result was all about the rockstar. Not any one in particular but more about the rockstar inside us all. From the opening look on Guerrino Santulliana, it was evident that this show would be all about leather, metal, and most of all, attitude. Fur line coats were plentiful and something that was often seen during LCM while slim and plasticized pants invoked a punk feel. In all, the collection was a fast paced look at what the new creative director will offer: clothes with plenty of attitude.
