In lieu of a runway show, Billy Reid showed his sophisticated and laid back Fall/Winter 2018 collection via a presentation that allowed viewers closer inspect of the elegant fabrics and the relaxed but still tailored proportions.

Some designers take a description of their collection as "simple" as an insult but not Billy Reid. For his FW16 collection, his designs were purposely simple and laid back, conveying the slower lifestyle he and his company lives in Alabama. Fabrics were soft and pliable and very fluid, with pants puddling over the models shoes. Nature played a role in the collection with warm neutrals taking up most of the color palette that helped achieve the ease and simplicity of the collection.

As a man from the South, Billy Reid is fully aware of how important the correct fabric is, especially in the heat of Southern summers. Here, his use of lightweight fabrics as well as luxe jacquards and synthetic fabrics created to look natural made a strong impact. Laid back tailoring has become Reid's signature and that was clearly evident, seen on everything from the wide but chic trousers: looser on the hips and tapered as it flowed down the leg, to the roomy knits.

Textures from fur, suede and chunky knits gave Billy Reid's dynamic Fall/Winter 2015 collection an air of ease and luxury. The collection relied on oversized and roomy proportions to lay the layers on thick, apropos since New York is seeing its coldest temperatures in two decades. Relaxed tailoring was seen on an ombre patchwork jacket, which was refined and elegant though the description may indicate otherwise, while mixed media knits and coats were home-y and a nod to Reid's country bumpkin who seems to have graduated to city life. Belted trenches in suede and fur-trimmed vests looked expensive and chic while a plethora of knits, cableknit, patterened and the like, offered comfort and easy layering options.

Languid layers dotted Billy Reid's Spring/Summer 2015 lineup. The easy tailoring was met with simple patterns to create a relaxed and enticing men's collection. It had all the hallmarks of the country bumpkin Reid has touted since the inception of his nakesake label; however, the label has seen a subtle shift towards melding the country and the city, which is no surprise since he is still a man, who grows and learns. The evolution of his label likely mirrors that of his own. In the end, the collection was sophisticated, relaxed and desirable for its nonchalance.

Texture was de rigueur at Billy Reid's cozy Fall/Winter 2014 runway show today during NYFW. The setting was that of a stately lodge, complete with a fireplace that heightened the sense of intimacy and coziness of the collection. Billy Reid's men have always been the outdoorsy type and this collection seemed to be a window into what those same outdoorsy types wear after they've finished fishing or chopping up wood. They retreat into their homes, luxuriating in their comfortable but manly clothes and what's more comfortable and chic than a chunky patterned knit when the weather outside is oh-so-frightful?
RUNWAY: Billy Reid FW14
A rustic garden setting anchored a strong Billy Reid collection. For SS14, the Alabama-native opted for lounge-y designs in relaxed fits that fit perfectly with his aesthetic: rugged but well-dressed men. Pajama inspired trousers and jackets were aplenty, as were boxy and casual suiting options, with proportions ranging from short and cropped like a patterned short or elongated and baggy, like a chunky pin-stripped jacket.
