RUNWAY: Prada SS20
The fashion calendar is all sorts of wonky. Not only are there two seasons of collections being shown in New York this week (men's SS20 and women's Resort 2020), there is also Prada's special runway show in Shanghai. This expansive collection featured over 60 men's look - all of which aimed to fill an entire wardrobe or two with quirky Prada garments. High fashion's courting of Chinese consumers is no longer a coy ordeal, there is all-out seduction with special events, parties and shipping an entire atelier and hoards of models for a 12 minute show. As a note, while some want Asian money, they do not respect Asian people - as was seen from at least half of a hateful Italian design duo; that is wrong and despicable and should continued to be called out.Nevertheless, Miuccia Prada has aimed to be as inclusive with her cast as possible in recent years. So what did she have to offer this season? Everything from paramilitary tailoring and olive green layers to frothy and pastel knits to a bit of 50s nostalgia and loosely cut separates. Particularly taking were the self-references like the nylon jackets in shiny blocked colors or the pop-art appliqué jackets or even the feminine scoop neck tops - like a greatest hit tour. The money, as everyone knows, is in the accessories and there were plenty here from the necklaces to the headwear to the oodles of bags. So many bags that some models were carrying them in multiples: on their hips, on their hands and across their bodies or shoulders.
