RUNWAY: Dsquared2 SS17

A graffitied wall was the backdrop of DSquared2's Spring/Summer 2017 collection was reminiscent of what one might see in coordination of a back street, hard-edged fashion show full of hyper masculine men and matching clothes. Instead, what Dean and Dan Caten showed was equally as strong a look but one that celebrated flamboyance, freedom to be one's self and a joie de vivre that escapes many of the more "serious" labels. Platform heels (some in leather, some in sparkles, some in rainbow zigzag) were worn by every model, though a few were quite wobbly and many surely appreciated the hard work of their female counterparts when they wear sky-high heels on the runway.

Back to the clothes: they were definitely influenced from the street, with hard edges here and there, but the strongest, best pieces were the ones that were boldly sparkly and shiny. In light of recent tragic events in Orlando, Florida and the murder of British MP Jo Cox in London, where Dan and Dean reside, this collection's joy and celebration of life, lived to the fullest, with no fucks given, was a triumph. In their side-by-side strut down the runway for their finale, the Canadian twins donned rainbow scarves in solidarity for their slain brothers and sisters in Orlando.
