RUNWAY: Yohji Yamamoto FW16
The fears of children was a central theme to
Yohji Yamamoto's latest collection. Amongst the sea of black-on-black looks were stenciled drawings of monsters and other animals, culminating a drawing of a monster yelling "Let me eat you", though the connotation could be taken sexually as well. As for the clothes themselves, they were mostly oversized, with layers upon layers piled on top on another. Unlike other designers, Yamomoto's excessive sizing and layering was meant to be ironic at the current state of affairs, in fashion and in the world. At 72 years old, the Japanese designer still has plenty to offer and continues to prove that with age comes wisdom and that is what so many younger designers lack: perspective.
